Unusual Vintage 1950s Architect’s Oak Drawer Chest / Cabinet

We’re rather in love with this gorgeous vintage find, a 1950s architect’s cabinet with nine, slim lower shelves, originally designed for drawings and plans. Described as ‘honey oak’ when acquired, there couldn’t be a better description of the beautiful tone and grain of the wood. It’s glorious and we love the three bands of dark marquetry that wrap around the bottom. Most unusually though it features a top plinth /shelf with a decorative border inside, perhaps where models were displayed. It makes for an excellent display area with a generous cupboard for light-weight storage below. It dates from the 1950s but there is a definite Art Deco influence at play here with the curved edges and the wood stripes. An eclectic item that deserves a quirky home. Fine lingerie storage maybe with scents and parfums displayed on top? Or somewhere to stow papers, prints and letters perhaps

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition, dating from the 1950s. We have cleaned and buffed the wood with a natural beeswax polish, but otherwise left the original, glossy finish alone. It is a vintage item so does carry some very minor marks from use in line with its considerable age but this is light. Please browse our photos, noting a small faded patch on the right hand side of the cabinet. The two doors have good quality, original hinges in place, open and close with ease and have closures in good order. The interior is clean and tidy with a bank of nine fixed open shelves in place, also clean and in good order. Overall, the construction is superb – solid and stable with no repairs. Sadly there is no maker’s mark but given its good looks and fine quality, we guess that it originally resided in a prestigious architects’ consultancy and we believe it’s British in origin.
