Vintage 1960s Tall Walnut Glass Front Bookcase & Cabinet by Morris of Glasgow #1
A beautifully made, tall cabinet with an upper, glass-fronted bookcase and generous lower cupboard, made in teak and walnut by Morris of Glasgow in the early 1960s. Morris of Glasgow was a renowned Scottish furniture manufacturer, whose prestigious work included designing and manufacturing a bedroom suite for the newly married Queen and Prince Philip in 1947, (the suite still resides at Sandringham Castle!). This particular piece is part of their ‘Cumbrae’ range of home furniture, characterised by the exposed external dovetail joints, clearly showing the solid craftsmanship of the pieces. It’s the proportions of this piece that are unusual – tall and shallow, it would work so well in the alcoves next to a chimney breast. An unfussy, practical piece of midcentury furniture that would fit into a more traditional, mixed-style space from lounge to hallway to bedroom.
Description
This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition, dating from the 1960s. We have cleaned and buffed the wood with a natural beeswax polish, but otherwise left the original finish alone. It is a vintage item so does carry some minor marks from wear and tear in line with its considerable age. Please browse our photos. The two sliding glass doors are in very good order, with no chips and move with ease on their runners. Inside there are two adjustable shelves in the upper section and a single shelf in the lower cabinet. Their height is adjusted with pegs that slot into holes set in the sides. The shelves and interiors are all in clean, tidy order, just light signs of wear and use. The two doors have brass piano hinges in good order, working closures and a lower inside bolt. Overall, the construction is superb – solid and stable with no repairs. The Morris of Glasgow ‘Cumbrae’ gold stamp can be seen inside the bookcase.
