Vintage A Younger Rectangular Extending Teak Dining Table by John Herbert

A rather special extending dining table, designed by John Herbert in the 1960s for A Younger furniture, as part of his Fonseca range. Made from afrosmosia and teak to give that subtle tone distinction between the solid legs and the table top, its build is of a very high quality. Two draw leaves sit beneath the main table top. Pulled from either side, you can either partially or fully extend the dining surface. A Younger Ltd were British midcentury leaders in the 1950s and 1960s, producing low volume, high-end pieces, more often than not retailed through Heals. It was one of the first to be influenced its Scandinavian contemporaries and you can see this in the design of this table, where clean, crisp lines are softened with curves. We love how the legs seem to pour down from the table top.

This is an original, vintage table that is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in good – very good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned this piece and the main table top has been restored, a process which involved careful sanding, layers of matt varnish and a final polish to give a hard-wearing, durable finish. The two drop leaves are accessed at either end of the table, gently pulled out from underneath. You have the option to use one or both. This table can seat 4-6, 6-8, 8-10 depending on the size of your dining chairs. The leaves are in very good order as are the pull mechanisms, moving freely and with ease. As is often the case, the leaves are a touch darker than the main table top, quite simply because they are mostly stowed away so haven’t faded. There are minor scuffs and knocks here and there to the legs and edges but nothing to call out. Overall, this very fine vintage table is in good order. Sadly the maker’s label is no longer in longer place but it’s a well-documented design so we attribute it with confidence. Please do browse our photos for a good sense of colour and condition.
