Vintage British 1940s ex MOD Mahogany Chest of Drawers
This British, ex-Ministry of Defence, 1940s, vintage chest of drawers must have seen some action! Originally commissioned by the War Department, most likely for bases and barracks, it’s utilitarian in design, unfussy and no-nonsense, but it retains considerable old-fashioned charm and of course, provides masses of storage with five drawers – three large, two small. As you might expect with furniture of this nature, it’s extremely well-made in mahogany with pull handles and dovetail joints. And the patina of the mahogany grain is a joy, rich, warm and textural. The chest is crown stamped on the back with the initials WD signifying ‘War Department’. A wonderful piece of heritage and history, as well as practical for the modern home.
Description
This is an original, used chest of drawers that is ‘sold as seen’. Overall, it is in good vintage condition for its years. The piece has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out, and applied a natural beeswax polish to the exterior surfaces. The top which was rather heavily marked has been carefully restored and finished with a durable matt varnish. The five drawers slide with ease, feature dovetail joints, and are in clean and tidy inside. The external wood carries numerous marks, knocks and scuffs in line with its considerable age and use. There is a minor knock on the back right-side edge of the chest of drawers but assuming it will be set against a wall, this isn’t noticeable – please do view our photos for a good sense of the finish, condition and colour. It’s particularly well-made, solid and sturdy. The back of the piece is crown stamped with WD for the war department.
