Early Midcentury Danish Red Velvet Two Seater Sofa with Ornate Wooden Frame
What a lot of fun this old, curvaceous beauty is. It’s got it all going on. Swirls and scallops, curves and contours with ornate wooden details on the arms, the front legs and with a carved trim around its frame. The cherry red velvet, in absolutely outstanding condition, feels luxurious and plush, and the feminine flow of the frame is accentuated with braid piping that draws the eye over its lines. With neat ‘love seat’ / two seater proportions and striking-yet-elegant details, it would bring life to any space it’s put into. And really it could go into any room for an injection of instant glamour. It’s comfortable too with a firm, sprung seat and a tall, contoured back. It’s Danish in origin and heralds from somewhere between 1940s-1950s.
Description
This original, vintage sofa is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in very good, used condition. The piece has been thoroughly checked and vacuumed, and the on-show wooden frame buffed with a natural beeswax polish. The cherry red velvet upholstery is in remarkably good order considering its years, hugging the contours of the frame tightly and with no threadbare patches or fading to call out. There are just light signs of use. The piping cord is well secured in place and in good order too. You will see in our photos that the back panel is a different generic fabric – this isn’t a repair. It’s a common sight with sofas from this era. Quite simply, they were designed to be set again a wall and the furniture makers didn’t want to waste expensive fabric on the unseen back. There is a small tear in this panel and some minor pulls at its edges but as it won’t be on show, this doesn’t have any bearing on the look or appeal of this sofa. There are minor knocks and scuffs to the wooden frame, arms and legs. Again though, this wear and tear doesn’t take anything away from the appeal of the piece. The frame itself is solid and stable (note: despite being small, this is a heavy sofa!) with no creaks or joint concerns. It’s a well-made piece. Sadly there is no maker’s mark but we’ve imported this sofa directly from Denmark and it dates from between 1940s – 1950s – the upholstery underneath and style of the frame tell us this.
