Vintage AH McIntosh Double Extending Teak Dining Table
An outstanding piece of superior, British, midcentury design by renowned Scottish furniture maker, AH McIntosh of Kirkcaldy. Under the tutelage of Tom Robertson, head designer there from 1950s to the early 1980s, McIntosh was much inspired by its Scandinavian counterparts. Indeed, it emulated their design aesthetic, marrying together the finest quality materials and wood with cutting edge design that was both functional and beautiful. This grand dining table shows this off perfectly – a hugely versatile, everyday piece and a considered, expertly balanced piece of design. We love how the legs pour out of the table top. The genius of this piece lies hidden underneath where there is a double extension. Slide the two table halves apart and the extensions rotate and fold-out with McIntosh’s clever, patented mechanism. You can opt to use just one or both so this dining table has three different widths, depending on how many guests you need to accommodate. Fully extended, it can comfortably seat ten.
Description
This is an original, vintage table that is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in very good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned this piece and the main table top has been thoughtfully restored, a process which involved careful sanding, layers of oil and a final polish to give a hard-wearing, durable finish. The two extending sections are hidden underneath the centre of the table. The two table halves are pulled apart to reveal them and you can choose to just extend by one or by both sections. The patented, folding mechanism rotates the extensions and then they are flattened out. The two sides are then pushed back together to give a seamless finish. All mechanisms are in excellent working order, moving freely and with ease. As is often the way with extending tables, the two extending sections are slightly darker than the main table top. This is quite simply because they have been less exposed to sunlight and used less. There are minor scuffs and knocks here and there to the legs and edges but nothing to call out. Overall, this very fine vintage table is in super order with the maker’s label and patent plate in place, adding to its provenance.
