Set of Four 1970s Danish Niels Larsen Ply Stacking Chairs
If you’re a fan of mix and match style with a soft spot for rustic industrial design, this set of four Danish bent plywood stacking chairs, attributed to Niels Larsen will appeal. They are ideal as good value, family dining chairs, as occasional chairs for when extra guests arrive, or even as patio chairs in the summer for al fresco evenings. We like their silhouette and rugged good looks very much, especially the worn paint patina on the metal frame, and we like too that they are full size chairs – often stacking chairs are smaller but the proportions of these match up well to standard dining chairs. And of course they can be neatly stowed away when their work is done.
Description
This original, vintage set of four chairs is ‘sold as seen’. Overall, they are in good, used condition. The chairs have been cleaned with a natural beeswax polish applied to the plywood seat and backs. All of the chairs have plastic feet caps in place. The contoured bentwood seats and backs carry knocks and chips, notably at their edges, which you can see in our various photos. There are no rough points likely to snag clothes but you could opt to varnish the wood to create a stable coating. The silver metal legs / frames also carries marks, scuffs and rust decolouration but we rather like this patina so have left well alone. It gives them an authentic industrial feel. As you can see from our photos, particularly when stacked, the legs are a little out of alignment here and there, but the chairs are solidly made, sturdy and robust with no concerns at all about stability. This minor movement has occurred through use and stacking over the years. The remnants of the Niels Larsen / Denmark maker’s sticker can be seen on the underside of each chair. They date from the 1960s / 1970s.
