Unusual 1950s Vintage Three Door Maple Sideboard
We’ve never seen a sideboard quite like this before and we love it all the more for that. It has the most extraordinary fiddleback grain across its door fronts, most likely maple or sycamore veneer. We believe this sideboard dates from the 1950s and is British in origin. Although no maker’s mark, the more traditional design and the way it’s made lead us to this conclusion. And a rare find too as we’ve not been able to find anything similar. The closest we’ve got is Vanson’s Peter Hayward sideboard which has a similar over-hanging top with a bevelled edge. The storage offered is plentiful. The left hand cupboard features a bank of drawers, the right, double door cupboard features a contoured shelf. It’s a grand, elegant piece and the light wood does make it stand out and yet the overall design is simplicity itself, letting that beautiful blond wood take centre stage.
Description
This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. We have cleaned the interior and exterior wood, applying a natural beeswax polish but have otherwise left the original finish alone. Removing this for a restoration would, we feel, come with the risk of losing both the tone and grain. We didn’t want to do that, especially when the wear and tear is minimal considering its years. The three doors move freely and the closures are in good order. Both cupboards have working locks with large brass keys. The small, single cupboard on the left features three teak drawers and a further felt-lined, sectioned cutlery drawer. These are beautifully made in teak and feature dovetail joints. The interior wood, both within the drawers and the overall cupboard, is in good, clean, tidy order. The large double cupboard on the left features a contoured shelf (it was originally designed to hold drinks). Although this is floating, sitting on wooden brackets either side so can be removed, it’s not height adjustable. Again, the interior wood is in clean, tidy order with minimal marks and scuffs. The left hand door has an internal bolt at the top. The varnish on the exterior wood is aged with faint crazing if you look at close. It’s a little chipped and knocked in places, across the fronts, the edges and on the top surface. This can be seen in our photos so do browse. We feel that this is minimal and doesn’t detract from the appeal of the piece. The four brass capped feet are securely affixed. Sadly there is no maker’s mark and we’ve been unable to find a similar piece but we believe it’s British in origin and its design and construction lead us to believe it dates from the 1950s.
