Original 1960s Mid Century Large Teak Sideboard
This supremely handsome, grand sideboard has had us foxed. Despite our very best efforts we’ve not been able to establish the designer or manufacturer. Those striking, integrated drawer handles are such a key design feature and although we can see similar designs on vintage Dyrlund sideboards and even on Arne Vodder’s furniture designs, we can’t attribute this piece with absolute certainty. There are certain build features and design motifs that make us believe it’s most like Scandinavian, as opposed to British made. For the start, those elegant, long tapered legs are much more in line with Danish midcentury designs. British sideboards from the same period tend to be chunkier, more substantial. And this small but crucial detail means this very large item of furniture doesn’t seem cumbersome or ‘heavy’ (even though it is!). It’s made in solid oak with solid teak frontages, tops and legs. It would make a superb statement addition to a mid-century-inspired interior, providing a huge amount of storage and display space.
Description
This is a vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. We have cleaned the piece, applying natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood but have otherwise left the original finish well alone. The six drawers slide with ease and are clean and tidy inside. The two top left drawers are sectioned and green felt-lined for cutlery. Both sides feature a double height lower drawer. The central cupboard doors align, and open and close with ease, their closures in good order. There are some minor stains to the interior wood in the cupboard – it’s clearly been used for drinks / glass storage as there are a few ring marks. The cupboard features a height-adjustable shelf. The exterior wood is in overall good condition. There are some knocks, scuffs and dents but not enough to warrant an invasive restoration, we feel. As is usually the way, the top of the sideboard has taken the brunt of wear and tear – there are some faint stains and patches of discolouration here. Please refer to our photos. There is a small repair to one of the drawer handles on the left hand side. It’s been glued but once in situ, it’s not particularly visible. Overall this sideboard is extremely well-made in solid oak and teak. There are no wobbles, joint concerns or repairs. It’s a beautifully designed and constructed piece that we strongly believe is Scandinavian in origin – when acquired it contained a high-end Swedish cutlery set! Note: this is a very large, heavy piece so please be sure of access.
