Rare Early Vintage CC41 Ercol Model F182 Rocking Chair

This little rocking chair is a charmer. It’s an early ‘Windsor’ design by Lucian Ercolani and the CC41 stamp on the back of the chair tells us it was made specifically between 1941 – 1951, in line with war-time / post-war production austerity regulations. Although its proportions are compact, it’s actually not a child’s chair and it’s sturdy and comfortable for a regular-size adult. This design is unfussy and utilitarian… in later years, Ercol’s Windsor range evolved to become softer and more refined but we are really fond of this rocking chair and its incredible history. It deserves a place by the fire or in a bedroom perhaps for a slow, relaxed life.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in overall very good, used condition. We have lightly cleaned the chair and applied a natural beeswax polish. Prior to our acquisition, someone has restored this chair and they have done a pretty good job as we know what a labour of love it is! The original dark blue ‘This is an Ercol Production’ sticker is affixed to the back of the chair, alongside the CC41 utility stamp. This stands for ‘Commodity Controlled’ and the CC41 scheme was launched in 1941 during the second world war by the British Board of Trade and applied to goods, including furniture, as proof that the item met the government’s austerity regulations. The scheme ran for 10 years between 1941-1951. Although there are some small scuffs and knocks, it is very solidly constructed in solid elm and beech with no wobbles or signs of repair. Any marks are minor and as you might expect, given its considerable age. In our view the vintage condition only adds to the appeal and provenance, as does its history revealed by the stamps.
